eGovernment 2017 and beyond

Image
As the term has developed throughout the past nine weeks there has been much information passed about eGovernment and its impact on the current government system and how it works. Constant changes throughout the past decade of how technology has directly affected the way governments both locally and federally have run. Reaching the citizens and keeping them more involved within changes in policies and big impacts that affect them is the bottom line goal that needs to be achieved with an eGovernment system. The year is 2017 currently and I believe eGovernment is truly just getting started with how far it can go making easy and accessible services for its citizens. The following video was made in 2015 and all of the points within the video saying by the end of 2017 have come true. Now of course the system is not perfect right now but when making major overhaul to government and reform those changes do not come quickly. These changes being made and eGovernment being a focus needs to...

Ethics in E-Government

Image
E-Government being a 21st century movement is very new and constantly changing so it is only right there is a set standard of ethics involved with it as it moves forward. How does one go about creating a framework of what an ethical system looks like and what it will contain? Looking at America as a whole you can make a fair assumption that the large majority of the population is digitally connected and there is an effort made to provide internet access to a large portion of the population. If you were to compare America's ease of internet access to other less developed nations the disparity would shock you. North Americas population has the highest access to internet while the world average is 49.7 percent. This brings up the point of does one nation having ample internet access while other countries do not create a type of "digital divide" when one country or continent has resources that others severely lack? Is the internet a "right" that should be prov...

Big Data, Small Data, Open Data? What does it all mean?

Image
There are billions of pieces of "data" all across the world but is all data created equal? How do we break down the classification of data and what can we do as citizens and public administrators to funnel this data for good and positive uses? Luckily within the past couple of years there has been a data revolution going on and many young tech savvy citizens are jumping on board. From data collected about how many taxi cars are in a certain city to the exact population of a city the data is out there it just needs to be presented in the right manner. Big data is defined as a large volume of data which can be structured and unstructured and determines what a business/agency does on a day to day basis. Big data is to be analyzed to find trends and predictive behavior either among people or the environment as a whole. Doug Laney, an industry analyst describes big data with his three V's which are Velocity, Volume, and Variety. Volume relates to the amount of data that co...

Getting the young generation on board the e-governance train

Image
We all know the younger generations are all very tech savvy and seem to be either constantly glued to some sort of screen throughout most of the day. Now how can we use technology to help better society through teaching our youth the importance of democracy and eventually one day replace our parents generation? Through gaming of course because it seems their is a vast amount of the youth enamored with "gaming" so why not use this multi-billion dollar industry to help educate young adults on the importance of decision making in the form of a game. Kurt Squire introduced this concept to me with this below video. He brings up great points in that their is already a huge portion of young adults playing games for hours on end and they can interact with other people from all over the globe and the games bring them all together. Now of course most people will not play a game titled "How to be a public elected official" or some boring game of the such. But his concept i...

Social Media's role within modern day Government.

Image
As you can see from the above picture can you imagine how our fore founders view how the current state of politics is ran using social media? Imagine people displaying their tweets about how they do not agree with the constitution and having arguments over a certain "Bill of Rights"? Technology has brought us a long way since the foundation of this country in 1776. As we progress more and more as a society technology will always be at the center of it as it is an integral part of society today and prime example being "social media". Social media is the ever so controversial topic it seems like today but it is something that a large portion of our society uses every single day. This large portion of society now expands to our elected public officials using social media as a platform to spread awareness to whatever cause they see fit to promote. First we should start with pointing out the good that social media brings in the Government section. Any time a natur...

The three dimensions of E-Government

Image
There are three types of dimensions incorporated within the realm of E-Government according to Arild Jansen (2005) which are, the democratic dimension(e-democracy), service dimension (e-service), and the administrative dimension (e-administration). The democratic dimension is how the people who elect the officials get in contact with them and voice their opinion on certain matters. This has changed so much within the last twenty years because their are dedicated webpages out there to look up and find your local congressman (or woman) and directly email them any concerns. This was not something you could do twenty years ago and is a direct move forward in the name of e-Government which makes the new technology work for the people. The old saying work smarter not harder is quote that directly relates to this type of style of governing the people and in many cases can reach more people. The service dimension is relating to the service side that public agencies administer to the public...

How can e-Governance help its citizens

People today are very busy and constantly on the go with all different types of things going on in their life. How can the implementation of e-Governance help its citizens when they need something from the public service? Years ago you would go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and wait sometimes for hours simply to talk to someone than have to fill out paperwork and it was a very long process. Now with the implementation of online systems you can fill out the paperwork before hand and streamline the whole process. You can have the paperwork filled out and be in and out of there within a few minutes as opposed to the old system of grabbing a number and waiting until someone can give you a form. This is a huge benefit to both the employee and the citizens that frequent these places for things they need. As society becomes more technologically advanced systems like these will become more of the norm and it is up to the up and coming public administr...
